Bloomsbury

On Saturday July 17 we were given a walking tour of the Bloomsbury area by our Blue Badge Tourist Guide,  Hugh. Informative and charming, he pointed out many architectural and cultural details of the area.

Established by the Bedford family in the 1780's, Bedford Square was a park surrounded on four sides with residential homes. The homes are exquisite examples of Georgian architecture, which was noted for its symmetry and keystones above arched doorways.

The English architect, Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850-1929), added elaborate detail to existing buildings.

Doll's most famous  creation was the Hotel Russell, built in 1898 and located on a corner of Russell Square.

Another fascinating aspect of the tour was seeing the homes of influential figures of the early 1900's, especially the Bloomsbury Group

  3. Thought I posted this before, but...? Love the big old monstrosity Hotel Russell. That's where we stayed when I first visited London in 1976 (or was it 1876?--feels long ago).
